WHAT IS HAIR LOSS OR BALDNESS?

Hair loss or Alopecia refers to the loss of hair from scalp due to age, hormonal changes or any other disease condition. Many times this condition can seen in young age which termed as premature hair loss.

CAUSES OF HAIR LOSS?

Let’s quickly go through the causes of which may lead to hair loss.

1. Hormonal changes

Both in men and women we can see the hair loss because of age or the hormonal changes. A hormone called DHT, which is related to the testosterone may lead to hair loss.

In Male Pattern Hair loss/Male Pattern Baldness (MPB) we can see a typical pattern hair loss seen in male, which due to DHT.

In women at the time of pregnancy there are lots of hormonal changes, which may lead to hair loss.

2. Heredity

Many times hair loss especially Male pattern and Female Pattern Baldness are because of hereditary and runs in families.

3. Injury

some injuries may lead to scaring and hair loss.

4. Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the TSH level increase in blood because of decrease production of Thyroxine levels. This may lead to loss of vitamins and iron ultimately it leads to thinning and hair loss.

5. Diabetes

Diabetes also leads to the hair loss and hair thinning.

6Anemia

Due to lack of iron and folic acid in body hair loss may occur.

7. Stress

Stress also increases the level of DHT and this leads to hair loss.

8. Smoking

Smoking also affects hair loss by increasing the levels of DHT.

TYPES OF HAIR LOSS/ ALOPECIA

1. ANDROGENIC ALOPECIA
This kind of alopecia is common in male is termed as male pattern baldness or MPB. Sometimes this is also seen in Females as well. Androgenic alopecia is usually because of the androgen which in this case we see mainly DHT- dihydrotestosterone which is found in male and female both.

a. Male pattern baldness

In this type we can see there is a fix pattern of hair loss in male. The male pattern baldness has main 2 types of grades which falls under NOOWARD CLASSIFICATION & HAMILTON CLASSIFICATION. This both classifications suggest the stages of the hair loss in male. As the time precedes the hair loss also increases according the stage.

b. Female Pattern baldness

 In female also we can see the same classification as we see in male. Mainly we can see HEMILTON type of classification in female. Here we should understand that the female pattern baldness will definitely runs in family. As a mother have FPB then his son also has MPB after teenage or in later age as well.

2. ALOPECIA AREATA

Here the word AREATA means a patch. This type of alopecia usually starts suddenly which leads to patchy hair loss. This patchy hair loss may increase in size with tremendous speed. If not treated properly it will lead to ALOPECIA TOTALIS OF ALOPECIA UNIVERSALIS.

The Alopecia Universalis means hair loss from all over the body

3. TELOGEN EFFLUVIUM

There are three stages of hair growth

a.       Anagen

b.       Catagen

c.       Telogen

Which means

Anagen=Growth phase (3-7 years)

Catagen= Resting phase (2-3 weeks)

Telogen= Falling phase (3 months)

So the Telogen Effluvium means the hair are in the falling or Telogen phase. In this type of hair loss many hair start falling and clear loss of hair is seen everywhere around. This is also characterized by the loss of the bulk of your hair and sudden thinning of your hair. This falling of hair may last for 3 months or more than that.

 4. ANAGEN EFFLUVIUM

Anagen means the first phase of hair cycle and Anagen Effluvium indicated the hair loss in the hair growth phase. This kind of hair loss will be scary because the hair still is in falling phase even during the first phase of hair loss.

5. CICATRICIAL ALOPECIA

Cicatricial or Scaring alopecia means hair loss because of the chronic skin condition of infections. In which the hair loss occurs at the site of infection and this type of hair loss is a permanent type of hair loss. Now there is no any hair growth seen at this spot.

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE IF WE FIND ANY OF THESE HAIR LOSS?

As we have discussed lot many types of hair loss but for more details you must visit a Trichologist or a Dermatologist who can properly diagnose your condition and according to that he may prescribe few medicines if needed or suggest some guidance for it.
