WHAT IS VITILIGO?

Vitiligo is an Autoimmune disease characterized by white patches on the skin in various areas of the body. It is also known as Leucoderma (leuco=white, derma=skin).

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY

As most of the autoimmune disease, the cause of Vitiligo is unknown but in Vitiligo, our immune system starts attacking our body cells i.e. melanocytes. This leads to a lack of melanocytes and lack of melanocytes leads to less melanin production.

As we all know that melanin is the pigment that gives our skin and hair their natural color. So, in the deficiency of the melanin color pigment, the patient usually finds white patches on the skin. These white patches may vary in size and are also found in one area or multiple areas of his body.

SYMPTOMS

·       Premature grey hair

·       White patches in localized or in generalized are of the body

 

TYPES OF VITILIGO

·        A. SEGMENTAL

In this type, of vitiligo, the white patches on the skin remain to one localized area of the body and do not increase in size. Usually, this doesn’t spread to other parts of the body.

·        B. NON-SEGMENTAL

a.     FOCAL

In this type, the patch usually appears on one area or one side of the body but unlike segmental, the patch may increase in size or later it will be seen in other parts of the body.

b.     GENERALISED

In this type, Vitiligo is seen in more than one part of the body which may increase in size.

 

HOW DO VITILIGO STARTS?

It may start with the small patch anywhere On the body. Usually, it is seen in hands, feet, lips, or eyelids.

 

WHAT CAUSES VITILIGO

·        1. AUTOIMMUNE

This is because one’s immune system starts attacking his melanocytes. Why the immune system responds in such a way, is unknown.

 

·        2. HEREDITY

If vitiligo is in one’s family, there are higher chances of the person affecting it.

2. ARS SULPH FLAVUM 6C- Usually the first choice of treatment in specific medication is Ars Sulph Flavum.

3. HYDROCOTYLE 6C- This is a specific medicine used in the Treatment of Vitiligo.
